Good morning guys, Does anyone know of a JBMR barrel for sale? Even a real ratty one. I have a .50 and would like a .54. Not interested in a trade, only a buy. I know the barrel makers are busy right now. I bought the rifle second hand last year and love it. Here's a deer I shot last fall with it. I was so excited for a first kill with my new rifle that I wasn't real particular about the size of the deer. The .50 worked fine. I'm not trying to start a .50 vs .54 thread but I do hunt moose every year with bow or cf rifle and would like to try the ML in .54.
I hope the picture prints. Never done this before.

OK, my picture didn't print. I just watched the picture posting tutorial video. WOW! That's one way to make sure this site isn't over run with photos. I WILL figure it out!

I just saw a really nice one at the Grand Forks North Dakota gun show last weekend. Looked to be pretty much new condition, but a bit pricey at $950.

I've killed several deer with my .54 Browning, they made a nice rifle and are getting harder to find these days.

Mr Johnson, I may go the route of buying a complete new rifle. I was thinking of just buying a barrel but those are proving to be pretty rare. I found my JBMR on gun broker and paid pretty close to that for it. I guess "want" overcomes good sense all the time, especially with guns.Mine has the iron hardware on it which I was told was the way the common rifles were built way back when. Brass was for the more upper end guns. Don't know if it's true but it makes sense.

If your interested I could probably find out who the dealer was that had the rifle, I see him at the local shows all the time. The rifle in question has the steel furniture, I have only seen a few with brass.

Another option rather than going up to a fifty four caliber from a fifty is to take some 54 caliber balls and run then through a sizing die cutting a .490 band onto the 530 ball. It gives an egg shaped "ball" that loads easily yet has more mass than the 490 and will stabilize as well as a true round ball. I make some of these in a hollow point configuration for a friend and they really work well for him. :hmm: :hmm:

Mr Johnson, if you had that info or could get it I'd appreciate it. I did get a private email from another member who has a rifle or barrel for sale but we're in the "shopping stage". Thanks for your help. Jim

Ohio, ideas like yours are part of what draws me to muzzleloading. I'm not sure I have the know how with barrel pressures and such with center fires to even attempt that. I would just get a new recipe out of a reloading data book and try a bigger bullet. I suppose your idea is similar only more do it youself style. Thanks for the idea. I'll consider it. Jim

This is why I like this place, always a new (to me) idea, to pick up on.
I'd realy like to hear more about this.
Where can I get a sizing die, and how do you make the hollow point on it?
Ever tried it with a .58 ball?
