A couple of days ago I started whitling down the wood on the stock for the recently acquired Investarms .36 cal Santa Fe Hawken kit. Lots of extra wood to play with.
Rasping, planing aplenty and about ready for sanding, but before that fitting what metal parts I can. Of course I lost a screw for the rod thimble! Sent an email to the folks in OR for a replacement.
Had the devils own time getting the hammer to fall on the lock. It would trip with the set trigger but not the front trigger. Dragged out my Lyman GPR to compare and couldn't really find anything odd but did not that with the GPR lock in place it would trip with both triggers. Then I remembered that to make the predrilled hole line up better for the trigger plate, I removed a bid of wood on the aft end of to allow it to come back a bit.
Well, I think that was just enuf to change the triggernometry angle to where it didn't put the energy where it needed to be. Also, it really needed to have the pressure of the trigger guard on the plate to keep it down. Same deal there, holes off center both ways. Removed a bit of brass from both ends and sides of the T/G and put it together.
When I unconfounded all that I got it working. Been a long time since I messed with one of these units.
Got the tang screwed in, and barrel mates up very well with that. I relieved a bit of wood under it close to the tang so it doesn't require so much fulcrum to seat the barrel for the tenon. Check.
Got the rib on but then lost a thimble screw. Now down to odds and ends, waiting for some stain I ordered, then once all the metal is fitted and working, I will finish up the wood with sanding, then stain and likely tung oil.
