Through a strange set of circumstances I now have a smoothbore smokepole.

Last fall I bought an underhammer rifle from a friend. Twenty odd years ago he had built it originally as a 10 gauge shotgun for a customer who backed out. He put a rifle barrel on it planning to use the smooth barrel on another project. I saw the underhammer heavy barrel last year and had to have it. He told me it was intended to be a trap gun but had taken the barrel off and mounted the bench barrel. He said he was sure he had used the 10ga barrel. I bought the underhammer and took it home.

Last month I was at his shop and saw a few shotgun barrels on his bench. I saw one that looked like it would breech up to my underhammer. I asked him about it and he said he stored a bunch of barrels years ago, had just came across them, and the 10ga was from my underhammer. After some dickering I brought it home. The bore is clean without any pitting, nicely blued, 32 1/2", and missing the fore end. If he finds it its mine, but I'm planning on carving out one.

He told me he got his 10ga wads in bulk at Friendship, and used 100grs ffg with 1 1/4 oz shot.

I want to dove hunt with it; where can I get wads for it reasonable. I'm not wanting to use plastic, so card and fiber are my preferred options.

Also, can a man make a shot snake without the metal head or cap? I'm thinking in the field I'd like to have one.

Thanks all.

Do you mean a shot pouch?...
CVA use to make a cheap shot pouch that you hung around your neck...(I never liked that) it had a wooden plug and pour spout.

I found it to be too cumbersome and made myself a small tube shaped heavy leather flask with a flip open leather top...the whole thing fits in my shooting bag and can be operated with one hand. It hold enough shot for hunting.
