OK folks ... So went to the gun store on the shelf sits a Jukar .45 cal. its the brass trigger/frame variant. He wants 250$$ it was a kit gun....with a meh, overall finish. Barrel is poorly finished, stock finish ran over lock.. butt plate with terrible fit and loose. Anyhow i was gonna offer him a more realistic price...like 90$$ any thoughts on what fair value would be .....oh yeah ..bore has small/ mod amount of red rust...nothing to bad. mostly at the breech. looks like a break drum thats been setting outside a few days is all

sounds like a 60$ rifle to me.I would NEVER pay 250$ for a Jukar/cva rifle. Especially in the condition you described.. Check out your local Armslist site. You might find one there. Or as your putting the word out here, you may have a forum member or two contact you with one for sale..or one that you can put together.
My 2 cents

If the breech has rust, I would be worried about how bad the rust actually is and if it may have damaged the structural strenght. You have to remember that your face will be very close to that breech plug, so you want it safe. Also, many shops will try to clean up a gun before they put it up for sale in order to try to get more for it. I wouldn't ever pay $250 for a Jukar, maybe close to that for a VERY nice CVA, but preferably less. That gun you describe, I might take a chance on it at $75, and would pay $50, but either way, I would strap it to a tire or something and proof it before even considering firing it while holding it.

If I may give my advice without being too out of line? I would pass on this gun. Since you were considering buying it, I assume you have that $250 burning a hole in your pocket. Here is what I would do. Either find one from a mmeber here since the condition will be better and the gun will be better taken care of, or I would save a little more, since a little over $300 should get you a brand new Lyman Trade Rifle, in either caplock or flint lock, and either .50 or .54 caliber. They're good rifles and at least you would know for sure that the rifle hasn't been abused. And if you buy used here, at least you buy from a more informed shooter, who, at least the ones I have dealt with, takes care of their guns and preserves them since they want them to last a lifetime and then someone elses lifetime, not a deer season or two like some of the ones I have seen in pawnshops. I would stay away from the one in that pawnshop if I were you, especially at the completely inappropriate asking price.

You sure don't want it for any more than the 90 your willing to offer.
The above advice is spot on,, 50-75.

If the guy thinks he can get more let him keep it,
For real,,Let Him Keep It.

In my area, a good $250 factory gun like a T/C, Lyman or CVA (the good ones) are not hard to find. Don't get suckered into the low cost aspect of a poor gun. You will very likely get discouraged with muzzleloaders if you do.

well you guys are gonna love this ...so i read the post (thank you all) i went to gunbroker and armsamerica ...printed some prices. I showed him what a pristine Jukar/CVa Goes for .....he told me hed sell it to me for 200$ and not a penny less...Heres the funny part. I This all happened at a gun store....not a pawn shop! Then the man proceded to tell me that the gun was his uncles ...who died...and yadda yadda yadda. I politley told him that i understand the sentimental value ...but that i wasnt going to pay for it and again offered him a reasonable price ...(i lowered it to 75$ :) ...He told me to go to hell...so i did the next best thing . I quietly returned all of the lead balls, patches and other items i had in my arms....and told him to ahve a good day... Soooooo long story short....when someone treats you unkind ......be nice to them.....and when they arent looking smear dog poop under the door handles of their car :blah:

The gun is not worth $250 at all. Maybe $125-150 at best.
For $50-75 more bucks you can find a good used T/C so I wouldn't buy that rifle unless he comes down on the price.

I agree look for a TC Hawken instead.

Sound like some of the stores around here!

The only thing more frustrating than trying to buy from someone, who KNOWS what their gun is worth, is trying to buy from someone, who has no idea! I really like the "door handle" idea!

You did the right thing by walking out without buying anything. First, I would not have considered that gun any way because there are a lot of better ones out there in that price range. Second, when he told you to go to hell he was telling you that he is a very poor businessman or has an anger management problem or does not understand his product or all three! As a retailer myself, I have to many times bite my tongue when dealing with an annoying customer - not saying you were annoying or anything - but in point of fact the guy who gets on my nerves today may well be my best customer tomorrow. You are smart to get clear of this guy.

If somebody at a shop literally said "go to hell" to me I'd just have said "OK", set the other stuff on the counter and walked out. Let him put it away. If he's ******, that's OK, I won't be back anyway.

It's OK to have disagreements about what a gun's worth and sometimes you can find middle ground and sometimes you can't. But there's no reason not to be civil about it even if you think the other person's lowballing you.

This Traditions .50 was at a Gun Show,... I picked it up and looked it over,... Nice tight simple rifle with a nice bore and crisp lock. I looked at the price tag that said $125.00.... Before I could put it back on the guys rack he said "Make me an offer" :hmm:

My reply was "I don't want you to take a swing at me".... He said ,.... go ahead make an offer,.. I reach in my pocket and pull out the $56.00 I had left and said.. "O.K.... Fifty Bucks ! ". He said common it has to be worth more than that !,.... I said yup ! It probably is,... but I only have 56 bucks... and I want to grab some lunch on the way home....... He snapped up the 50 bucks, And i walked away with this lil honey.

It actually shoots really well...... I'll take as many of these that come along for $50.00 I can find...... I would pass on the Jukar.

I am currently dealing with a guy on a (off topic) really rough 92' Winchester in 32-20, Cool piece but the guy is off his rocker on price.

The gun and pawn shops here would be selling that piece for $249 and feed ya the line they have "$200 in it and couldn't take a penny less".

Did you read the part where it said "It shoots really well" ?......

As much as I appreciate your generous offer,.. I just wouldn't feel right about making somebody else carry this burden,.... I'll just have to pass it down to one of my grandson's someday......or use it as a tomato stake  :blah:
