I have really enjoyed all your posts. It reminds me of when I was younger (50 years ago) listening to Dad and his friends talk about horses and fishing and all the other interesting topics. Back then I couldn't get enough. I spent a week several years ago learning how to begin with Uri Hoffi and Tom Clark. I'd love to go to New Mexico and learn from Frank Turley. Right now I've been burning coal I got from BAM in a riveters forge. The steel has been either cold rolled or hot rolled mild steel. I did make four strikers from old files. After tempering them a file won't even touch them. But they sure throw a shower of sparks but they are brittle. Made me a bending jig. Also made a hot cut hardy from an old axle. It's not real pretty but it works. Also some forge pokers and watering can and such. Thanks for all the help.
