I wonder what type of powder, and the charge used in the gun pictured in the OP. I have loaded smokeless in a BP revolver MANY times, and didn't damage the gun in any way.

If smokeless pressures are kept equal to, or less than the level of black powder loads, there will be no added stress to the gun.

Check it out. BTDT.

Pressure spikes are near impossible to predict without proper equipment, and just because a gun hasn’t blown up yet with a modern powder charge doesn’t make it safe. The steel used to manufacture blackpowder cap and ball revolvers and muzzleloaders is not the same as the steel used in modern guns. The two destroyed blackpowder guns that I have personally seen were loaded with modern powder, one as a main charge, the other with a modern powder kicker charge. I have been criticized for using finer granulations of blackpowder than some believe are not safe, but modern powders are an entirely different beast, that in my opinion should not be used in guns designed and manufactured for use with blackpowder. Hope no one gets hurt.

I don't think that's a good idea, either. When you use smokeless in a BP gun, you're unnecessarily opening one more path to a potential screw-up. Yes, the odds may be low as long as you're careful. But being careful to only shoot black powder lowers the odds of blowing the gun up with smokeless all the way down to zero... ;)

The problem here is that a VERY small error in measurment will result in disaster. I would not recomend shooting with B P Arn. If you do, stand way behind him with ear and eye protection. Don't buy a used gun from him, either. A gun shop near me has a blown up cylinder on the counter but not nearly as bad as this one. Zonie, where are you???

And what did Forrest Gump's mama say?
Dave

While mostly true it could potentially help those who are only half stupid like many of us may have been in our younger days... Some of the half dumb people eventually wisen up to what the older people have to say instead of figuring it out themselves. Just some though.

There’s a reason muzzleloading manufacturer’s label their barrel’s Black Powder Only. It’s not just lawyer talk to protect them from liabilities.

Personally seen the aftermath of a barrel on a long rifle that was totally ripped apart at the breech and another barrel that was peeled like a banana at the muzzle all the way down to the mid section of the barrel.

Both cases were direct results of using modern smokeless powder in them.

Personally didn’t witness it but did examine the aftermath of both that happened at two different occasions.

Just because it hasn’t happened to you YET! doesn’t mean that the next shot will not have your number. Very good chance it will.

Russian Roulette on steroids!

Respectfully, Cowboy
