Wanted a .50 cal pistol for target practice and plinkin' in the woods. Also wanted to stretch my creative side and see what I could do with an inexpensive kit. I decided on the traditions Kentucky Pistol. I wanted to try my hand at a faux curly finish. Sanded to 220 grit, whiskered the wood, and then burnished when dry. Stained with Minwax Colonial Maple for the background color. Stripes were applied with small brushes and russet colored leather dye. Then I applied several coats of Formbys satin oil finish. And IMG_2284.JPGIMG_2286.JPG finally, when dry, I polished with steel wool and wax. I don't like bright brass, so I antiqued all the brass bits with Brass Black and browned the barrel. I know I could have slimmed down the wood some more, but it feels very nice in my hand and points naturally. Can't wait to try a few shots on Thursday. Wanted to share a few photos! I also made the bullet bag to carry a good supply of .50 round ball.

Nice work. The wood in these inexpensive kits is usually pretty bland but your skill changed that look. Thanks for sharing the photos and how you achieved the result.

Always like to see transformed wood. Your pistola carries really nice furniture. Good work.
