Just received my SMR in .36 upgraded maple.Would have gotten cherry but already have a.40 MT rifle in ohio walnut. Just a barn gun but shoots like a house afire. Old douglas barrel vcd lock been around awhileMaking a toe plate for my kibler gonna blue (hot tank) 3 times and card it off to grey. Think I'll shrink a bean steel patch box. Factory's are too big and don't fit the gun. Post some pic's when I take some.I just pulled the trigger on a Jim Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle .45 Cal kit! It will ship in 2 months. Bob, you always got some good gun ****
@Flintandsteel how did you patina your metal? And what chemicals (Aquafortis?) did you use to get that beautiful finish on the stock?
@Bob McBride I saw your video on your SMR. You said yours has a 48" barrel. I believe them are 46" now. Was yours a special order? Also you didn't talk about how you blued your metal in the video. What process did you use to patina it?

Nice that's the finish I want to go for on my SMR. Thanks for sharing your technique. I was searching YT for "how to patina gun metal". I just tried searching "How to French Grey gun metal". The only Video I have found so far is Jim Kibler's were he uses Historic Houseparts "Brass Darkening Solution". Bob you need to make a video on how you do it!Hey HJ, no I misspoke. I had a head cold that day and I’m surprised I got that close to accurate. It’s a 46”. When I go for a French grey sort of finish as on my SMR I usually either rub back cold blue with burgundy scotchbrite or rub back LMF browning solution the same way. I used LMF and then Kibler’s Brass Black over the top rubbed back (so the engraving would take a bit of darkening when rubbed back) on that one. I wanted some age and light pitting and I’m a big fan of greyed finish on most guns.

Beautiful! Is your metal in the White and just nicely aging or did you patina it?View attachment 53417
Here's mine. It's a .36. First wood upgrade, in walnut. Still amazed at how good it shoots.
