Just picked up, Model 1849 Colt

I know better, but just made an impulse purchase, hope I didn’t get stung to bad.
Appears to be all matching. Bluing is gone, but all markings are pretty good including the stage coach scene. Holds on half **** and full ****, minor cylinder movement at full ****. Grips almost look to good to be original, we’re these numbered inside.
Bore is dark but not pitted.
I know I should have asked before purchasing, but I paid $800 out the door.
Was that a reasonable price.

Nice, the original 1849 I had had the number stamped in the wood grips that taking the back strap off showed.

If I had $800.00 to spare and that was plopped down, I bet it would live here now. Guy named Mike on here works on those a lot. I was expecting to receive mine (.36 pocket sheriff type) from him Monday and expect it any day then I am sure I can ditto all the raves for his reviews. He knows more about them than most. Probably send my 1849 to him as well. It is a hoot to shoot for sure. To me its worth it just cuz of the age and the story I could make up for it (if it don't have one HA). Let us know how it shoots. I take it from the last couple of replies that I did not overpay.

I just looked up the SN on Colts data base. Pistol was made in 1860. I hope I am still functional when I am 163 years old.

1860 is the same year as my 1855 Root. I’d like to get an 1849 to keep it company. You did well!

Don't think you got stung at all. Looks like a very nice condition Colt 1849. Hard to find one that nice in person with all matching numbers in good working condition and at a reasonable price.

Was at a small one day antiques and antique gun show last Saturday and noticed two 1849 Colts for sale by two different table holders. Both revolvers had the same barrel length as yours. Did not handle either one. One was quite worn looking with many dings, brownish color and a general look of neglect; guy wanted $950. The other one looked nice with some silver on the back strap and trigger guard but the bluing did not look quite correct; that seller wanted $1,950.

If you decide to take the grip off please let us know if it is numbered inside; a picture would be appreciated.

Many pay that and more for 2nd and 3rd generation copies of Colts.
