Keeping a flaw

I ordered another Kibler (they are addictive)

This SMR has a really cool flaw that I like.

My original plan was to finish it almost black with tannic acid but after looking at it I would like the flaw to show.

Do yall think agua fortis will darken the stock but leave the bark showing?

i would try it on a test piece....i do like the bark inclusion , especially on an smr.

I’m just jumping on this thread to see what happens when you finish.
Can’t tell the amount of figure in the wood, I don’t think it will disappear, but subtly blend in.

The amount of aqus fortis applied to the stock will determine how dark the end result will be . More coats of the same finish will darken when heat is applied.

I've not seen a huge change in color with multiple coats.

I would assume this was purchased as a discount B-grade stock.

I don't think the iron nitrate liquid will soak into bark, so agreed with JK above that not much color change will happen.

I'm thinking it "stands out" right now because the surrounding wood hasn't been darkened.

This was sold as a "second" at a discounted price. The defects were clearly disclosed.

To add, I recall working on this stock and I feel certain it will finish into a very nice rifle.

I would leave it and finish it as I would normally do. I think it adds character. I have a custom Tennessee and the builder found some worm holes and he wanted to know if that would bother me. I said to leave them and I really like the way it looks.

My SMR had a similar flaw. All but dissappear and blended in after 2 coats of tanic acid and iron nitrate with Chamber' stock oil finish, as Jim said it would.
