Set off for a hunt in the windy squads today. Keeping it simple I just used thin cards. Mixed in were a few card cups I salvaged from Winchester ammunition years ago.

Fired six shots for three squirrels and two pheasants. One of the shots was to lift a dreyed squirrel from his bed.

Simple is best and you lead the way!
For my smoothbore (.62 Fusil de Chasse), I just use crumpled-up brown paper for over- powder wadding and grass from under foot, or ripped bits of brown paper, over the shot. It’s worked fine with squirrels and flying clays- I’m usually 9 out of 10 which suprises me happily.

Your method is an answer for shooters with a barrel like the choked Colerain Turkey barrel where it's hard to jam a .62 cal wad or hard card down a .58 cal opening. Materials like tow, or crumpled paper don't cause that issue. 👍

They do not engage in that practice here. They do not reproduce. Are you implementing any measures around your property to enhance habitat quality, or is it naturally favorable?

Quail/partridge habitat is also suffering.

I know at least some pheasants overwinter in NE, I track them in the snow. Besides habitat they have to deal yotes, foxes, raccoons, skunks which raid their nests and chicks.
