I just bought this super awsome device. it's a flashlight that goes in the bore and you get to see everything. The first thing that stood out to me when I put it down my Pedersoli kentucky pistol 54cal flint was there's some pitting goign on about 2-3 inches from the muzzle. It seems to be contained to this one area and in maybe a 1/4 patch and maybe 1/5 of the barrel which is really reaching on both of those numbers. from what little I can see it's not that deep.

Am not sure if this is a normal thing or something I need to contact them about.

If it's a brand new, bought from a dealer, never been fired, cleaned and stored pistol, contact the dealer or Pedersoli.

If it has been fired, cleaned and stored I'm sure both of them will shrug their shoulders and say "use a better rust preventative next time".

Yes, IMO, you should be concerned, but only to the extent that you get the existing rust out of the bore. Steel Wool on a cleaning jag combined with a little penetrating oil will usually clean up the loose stuff.
If the pitting is very light, chanches are that the gun, and you will never see any affect from it.
The important thing to remember is rust attracts moisture, which in turn makes more rust so clean it and use a good rust preventative oil on it.

Zonie :)

ok bare with me here for a min.

I took some photo's of the spot and from the closeups it does *NOT* look like pits but scratches. I'll let you be the judge of that.

Here goes.

OH btw I have not seen a single drop of rust inside this bore yet. other than when I was doing the rust treatment. I did get a ball stuck in there once and had to fish it out, I *THINK* this is the results. This is approx 3 1/2 inch from the muzzle.

Since the cuts appear across the bore, they may indeed be a result of your ball pulling adventure. It's hard to really be sure but they may have been a collection place for corrosion. Think the comments about keeping it clean in the future will be the best solution.

Wrap some 4 ought steel wool around your jagger, lube it up real good with Ballistol(or whatever you use) and scrub the heck out of the bore, then look at it again and see if it helped any. That's what I'd do. 4 ought won't hurt the bore and it'll take out any lead or rust that's there. :hmm:

It looks to me like you have both pitting and a scratch. Like has already been mentioned, scrub with some steel wool wrapped around a jag or a bronze brush and scrub. Once you get any rough spots out, it should still shoot just fine.

awsome, that's some good info that I had not thought about. I'll do that tonight.

I have some balistol, blue/rust remover, ol thunder, shooters choice bore cleaner, shooters choice black powder bore cleaner and a few others around here. will use some of them and see what happens. will post the results.

If you're lucky it may just be chatter marks from the rifling process so they should polish out with the steel wool. Good luck, let us see some pics of how it turns out.
