I bought this pistol at a pawn shop about 10 years ago.I was told it was a CVA Kentucky pistol.I had to order a new lock. When I got it the belt hook on the oppositte side wouldnt mount.
The barrell says CVA but it is so wore that you can hardly read it.It is a 50 cal.The gun shoots fine with the new lock but I was wondering if it is a Kentucky or something else.

I think Rebel is right, it was origionally a Colonial pistol, possibly a kit. The Colonials as they come from CVA had a much beefier forestock which made them look kinda boxey, this one has been slimmed down nicely. If as you say the barrel markings are very slight, this could be the result of some over-zealous draw fileing when finishing the barrel.

Looks like a fine pistol and should be a good shooter with the right load, at moderate ranges.

I agree . I have a CVA Kentucky pistol . It has the same lock , sights , and trigger guard . But my pistol has a brass fore end cap , no barrel key , and the stock is shaped differently . The stock is held to the barrel by the tang screw , and two screws that go through the fore end cap into the barrel , sandwiching the stock between them .

I think that is an early version of the colonial. The later versions (of which there were 3 according to the parts list I have) have steel ramrods. They look completely different.

I wonder if the lock you got is a rifle lock - looks like the same lock used in the Mountain Rifle.

What was wrong with your lock?

Tumbler was broke.Didnt have a PC to order parts, and back then I never new a thing about ML's.So I thought you had to order the whole lock.Could still be that way now, thats the only thing I have ordered from cva.

CVA's used the same lock on nearly all of their guns, or at least the same lock plate, (some locks had no fly, such as pistols and the Kentucky rifle).

The Hawken model rifles and the Philadelphia Derringer were about the only ones that used a different style lock plate.

Yup, its not a CVA kentucky... I have one that I picked up used as my first BP pistol, yours is nothing like it.

I have one of the CVA colonial pistol and the stock on it is much shorter. That looks like an early CVA Kentucky Pistol.

I'll start by saying I don't know what it is, but from the information I have, the
CVA Colonial came in .45 caliber with a 6 3/4 inch barrel. It also had a metal ramrod.

The CVA Kentucky did come in a .50 caliber as well as a .45 caliber. It has a 9 3/4 or 10 1/4 long barrel depending on which source I look at.
It is the only one that I see that has a wooden ramrod.
The finished gun and the kits had a brass nosecap but that could have been left off?

The only reason I'm not jumping in and saying it is a Kentucky is that the Kentucky did not have a large barrel key and this one does.
It also had a ramrod entry pipe, but here again, that could have been left off?

Maybe it is a genuine Something Else.
Zonie :)

I agree with Zonie I have a couple of the Kentuckys and had a colonial and they both don't match up to this example . For now an original something seems to fit . I would like to know what it really is , it looks like a neat gun and could be a fine shooter . I hope you get it figured out let us know .
