I got a traditions kentucky pistol in .50 cal. I shoot 10 grns. of goex FFFg and a .010 patch and a cast .490 round ball. great load I found for it  any one else have one? and any one tried to shoot any thing else but a ball in one. like shot or a conical bullet?

Wow only 10 grains? You must be able to see that ball head for the target. Well, if that works for plinkin then what the heck. I have the CVA version of the Kentucky and have had decent accuracy at 25 yards with 40 grains of Pyrodex RS and a .490 ball with a .015 patch. For closer ranges I use less powder 25 to 30 grains. Have fun, those are nice guns to shoot and easier to clean than a revolver.

I have had several similar guns over the years, from 36 cal to 50 cal. Whether CVA, Traditions, Pedersoli, Ultra High, or others, Never used them for anything but plinking and paper punching. I always figured 15 or 20 grains was enough for any one of them. I once tried shooting 45 cal minnie balls out of the CVA. Group opened to about 2 ft at 25 yds. Generally, the rifling needs to be shallow and preferably wider for minnies and conicals. In addition, pistols such as that are rarely used for shooting at game at any distance where conicals would provide an advantage over a patched round ball.

i SHOT BIRD SHOT OUT OF MINE ONCE JUST TO TRY IT.wORKED GOOD. AT 15 YDS. i THOUGHT i MIGHT USE IT ON SOME GROUSE THIS SEASON.

That is a light load. I have an old .45 CVA Kentucky and it's very accuate at 25 yards with a .440 ball, pillow ticking patch lubed with Ballistol oil and 20 grains of FFFg. Used it in several matches

I have one and shoot a .45acp shell of ffg. I think that is like 26 grains? Very accurate up to the 50 yard target. I can hit a target at 100 yards with a 40 grain charge and full front sight elevation over the rear notch. 10 grains must about spit that ball out. :hmm: Most comments about attempts at using a conical in these pistols are not at all favorable. The.50 ball will do all the damage you want. Many states will not allow them for hunting anyway, so what would be the purpose of shooting a conical?

the light load is for target work and ringing gongs. works great for that. sounds like a .22 mag. here in wa. we can hunt with a muzzle loading pistol of 6 inches or longer barrel lanth. gun able to hold and shoot more then 45 grains of powder and be .45 or lager.(page 75 in rules book.) thats why I was wondering about conicals in it. tried a 250 grain sabot in a friends trapper pistol and a full load of 45 grains of FFFg goex shot on taget but man it kicks like a mad mule!!!!!!!! think it would work for back up on blacktail deer?

As a "backup" on deer-close range finishing shot a .490 ball would do the job. But for a conical type, look at the ones on filibuste's post on The Lyman plains pistol.
