My son didn't have any appropriate fall gear, so I pulled out some checked wool and made him an overshirt.
It's not quite done, and I "cheated" and used machine stitching, but if I had tried hand-sewing, he'd freeze to death before his shirt was ever finished.
I'm not basing this on any known 18th century original, but checked wool shows up in store inventories, and Spence has provided some runaway descriptions that mention wool shirts, so I figured this would work well, especially for a six year old. He seems to like it, which is half the battle.
So now, a pair of buttonholes in the cuffs and one at the neck, and he'll be ready for fall.
