In your opinion, where is the best and cheapest place to get knife gaurds, bolsters, pommels. Don't need the blades or handles just the gaurds. I know of Dixie and track of the wolf.

Cheap and knife parts don't always go together well, in the same sentence or in real life. Google knife parts supply and it should open about 15-20 places to take a look at!

If you cant make them your self then I would agree with Rifleman=Jantz

I would make them myself, but i don't have the tools to do so right now. Plus, these are my first knives so i am gonna stick to the safer route while learning, since it is only the gaurds i am ordering. 2 of the knives were just blades that a buddy of mine liked and wanted new handles for. The 3rd knife, i am making for myself. It started out as a big imitation k-bar. I drew the shape i wanted onto the k-bar blade and cut it out, using the length of the k-bar blade to my advantage, making a tang for my blade. I had 2 deer skulls with antlers on them, and i am using the main beams of the antler sets with the crown for a handle for the 3 knives. Will post pics when i am done. I actually think that i like the one that i cut out better than the machined blades. It's grinding and cutting marks adds character and goes well with the antler to complete the handmade aspect of it all. Will post some pics of the process when i am done  Thanks for the helpful links also. Will check them out today!

You don't have a hacksaw and files? I'll admit that a drill, grinder and jewelers saw were also handy but not always necessary. That's all we ever used.

Good point- you'll be happier making your own guards. A set of needle files will connect evenly spaced- driled holes- the only difficult part of making your own guard- the rest you can do with regular files.

Hmmm...didn't know it was that easy to work them. Maybe i will try my hand at making my own after all. I do have the saw, files, drill, etc. Thanks for all the input...and the kick in the pants to make my own stuff!

Yes! I use Jantz Supply myself and those guys are great.

Problem is I would like some genuine black powder geek forged steel...and all the Jantz stuff is mass produced. Doesn't mean its bad, it's just that mirror finished 440C probably isn't 'period correct'.

Whatever, they are easy and a good way to keep busy in the hobby shop during the long winter months.

The only thing you need to watch is to make the fit tight between the tang and the guard. I make an undersized slot and glue sandpaper to a little piece of metal similar in shape to the tang but thinner and very slowly widen the slot until the tang fits.
Most folks will finish the guard and then make the slot - BUT- if the slot is a little off- then the guard is off. Also, if you screw up on the slot- the guard ought to be tossed.
SO....first make a good slot- if that fits great- make this slot in a blank piece of oversized brass THEN cut out and make the rest of the guard.
