A thin oil or water, depending on the stone. I like the cheap WD-40 knock off that Ace Hardware sells for Arkansas'. If your stone is too slick, it may be too hard, unless it's a finish stone. I use a soft Arkansas, then go to the green chrome rouge coated strop if I want razor sharp. For cleaning I would think maybe a vinegar soak, or apply cold brown to make the particles rust, then scrub clean in a few days.
 
I clean mine with hot water, Dawn dish soap and a old tooth brush. Kerosine works great for cleaning also.
 
I've used the sharpener on two pairs of sissors, my swiss army knife, my CKRT knife and my Colt M16 auto knife and man that thing is the cats pajamas.

If you follow the instructions it gives each knife a razors edge. I've tried other sharpeners and none of them have really worked all that well. This thing is the first that I've found that lives up to it's claims. Thanks for letting us know about it. :hatsoff:
