Kodiak Double Rifle

Does anyone have any experience with the Pedersoli Kodiak double rifle especially the newer version with the 1-28" barrel twist? I'm looking for loads, bullets that shoot well,what distances and general opions. Thanks

 

I have no experience with the Kodiak muzzleloading double rifle but I've received quite an education with cartridge firing doubles. If you want, contact me thru a Private Topic and perhaps I can help.

The 1-28 twist is pretty much for conicals and in this guise there will be much similarity of ballistics between the cartridge firing Express rifles of the late 1800's and a muzzleloading double.

Anyone know when the 1:28 twist came out? I picked up a older Cabela's model .54 about a year ago and she's still holding court in the safe. Reason I bought it was those were supposed to be 1:66 while all the others were the ubiqitous 1:48. Sure hope it isn't a fast twist as I want to shoot round balls out of it. Guess I will have to take a rod and measure it.

I bought a Kodiak double to hunt with this year. So far I have only punched paper with it. My first target was a 50 yrd 7-ring offhand I had two holes overlapping by about 1/4 in the 8-ring. Put several more offhand shots with lowest score of 6 and 2 10's. That was PRB with 60 gr. of fffg. At 100 yrd In 5 shots I had 2 9's 1-7, 1-6 and a miss :redface: . PRB with 65 gr of fffg. Overall a very good shooting rifle. I look foward to sighting in on a fat doe this fall to see what kind of knockdown it has with PRB. :hatsoff:

The .72 calibre kodiak has the slow twist specific for round ball.

Also has quite a 'bite' on BOTH ends with top loads!

Guy at a local shop was selling his .72 for $550. Probably went for about $500 and it took a while to unload. This guy was maybe 300 - 350 lbs and said it was hard shooting. I take it he was bench resting the gun and shooting the recommended load. I will say this, it was a bit lighter than my .54. I can see where it would bite some!

Yup! Fact is, i'm too old ta wanta shoot things that hurt me! Mebbe some kid wantin ta play machismo or somethin.

Also nagged at me some on the recoil mebbe pulling tha ball in unfired barrel loose from tha powder charge, quite a hefty ball, and inertia pulling is a known concept.

It WAS great fer that occasional obnoxious type ya find now&then at ranges, NOT tha polite and interested sort, but that knowitall that likes puttin hands on yer stuff uninvited.

Puttin a BIG load down that .72, one barrel only and offerin a shot to mr. obnoxious was most fun i ever had with it!

The original version had sights with limited movability and regulating the sights could be a real exercise in futility. Once helped a friend sight in a double .58 and after burning up 3 pounds of powder he decided to set the sights for the right barrel and use Kentucky windage to lob in the right barrel. The new guns have much better sights with more adjustment and it would appear they could be set for both barrels.

Agree with the comments about the double .72! That critter could kill on one end an cripple on the other!!

They have two rear sights mounted in a common base, one behind the other. These are the spring-loaded variety that can be folded down and flipped up. I guess you're supposed to sight one for each barrel. A lot of posts here say that some guns do shoot to roughly the same point with only the one sight. I would like to get the receiver or peep sight they make for this gun. It looks nice from the pictures I've seen.

BTW, cartridge double rifles are usually regulated to only one specific load. The precise regulation is one reason they cost so much. There's a Kodiak in .45-70 at a local shop on consignment (for a hefty price). If it's still there I will look at the sights next time I drop by. My bet is they are the standard adjustable flip-ups like on my .54.

My Pedersoli (Cabelas) 45-70 hammer double came with Shallow V Express style sights. 3 folding leafs with 100-200-300 yd markings.
300 gr factory loads shot to same point of impact at 50 yds.
I have been very happy with the rifle.

I've just got a Kodiac in .58 cal.(1:47) It seems to be very happy shooting with 70g of TS2(small grain slow powder) a .572 ball and .010 patch with moose snot plus a non lubed felt wad between the powder and patch at 100yds
Or a .577 minea lubed with moose snot, a card wad and again 70g TS2 - this at 50yards.
At 100yards I use the front sight for the right barrel and rear sight for the left. At 50 yds I use the front sight for both barrels.
