KY pistol timeline

Howdy all! Ive been pondering the idea of a custom Ky pistol.I like my old .69 cal Tower pistol...but man I love the looks of some of these custom curly maple kentuckys folks are building now.Now from what Ive been told....werent most pistols of the 1770s smoothbores?In the Enclclopedia Of The American Revolution.....I think only one has a rifled barrel. Were these so rare? :hmm: Id love to get one in a rifled barrel but I want to make sure it fits my personnas timeline of 1770. Any thoughts?

There are plenty of German-made rifled pistols dated prior to 1770. Look at enough of them, you'll see where the "Kentucky" pistols found their inspiration.

Yes, rifled bores in pistols at the time of our Revolution were rare, but they did exist.
If you want one, get one.

Pistols were present in the Revolutionary War. I don't know if any were issued. Most were personal property. Pistols were so epensive, only the rich upper class or officers could afford them. Most working class Americans were lucky to have one firearm in the house hold. Normally, it was a smooth bore. This way you could hunt with shot or ball to put meat on the table. The pistols were more of a display of position. Soldiers thought they were worthless in combat and was just something else to carry. I'm sure there were some battle field pick ups, as in any war. But, the Kentucky style pistol dose fit the time period.
