One day back in the late 80's , I was squirrel hunting on Fort Leaverworth Kansas. I saw a large animal approching me.
Maybe 20 yards away this thing stood up and I identified it as a racoon. I know it must have been my imagination, but I swear it stood up and look at me, eye to eye. I'm six foot two. That's one tall racoon. Don't grow them that big here in Southern Il. A friend of mine there, that I told this story too said "Yep and they get even bigger in Iowa". Question:
What's the biggest racoon you ever come across in the woods. And no, I was not on drugs at that time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Now I ain't never seen no 'coon big enuff thet I'd need a ironin' board ta stretch its hide, but I hez seen a grey squirrel at Land Between the Lakes Kentucky thet could'a weighed an' stretched in with any reglar 'coon. When I tol' my huntin' buddies about it I was forthwith accused o' smokin' some of the local shrubs, or partakin' a bit too librelly of Kaintuck shrooms. I took one of our bunch, a preacher, with me the next day an' he seen it too. I wuz still viewed with a jaunticed eye, but I would jus' point to the preacher an' he'd clear me an' threaten ta sic HISSELF on 'em if they called us liars.

I once caught a grey fox with one eye. Didn't even hev a eyelid, socket, ner nothin' fer the other'n.

I hez seen a white Hummingbird, a Grey crow, a black an' white crow, white Fox squirrels, a herd pie-bald deer in the Red River Gorge, an' an ol' buck with horns like a Jersey. (One o' the three o' us wuz aimed ta kill it with a arrar, but two o' tha three thought it war a haint er somthin' an' war a feared it wud come from tha daid an' fetch us.) Them two caught it an' held it so's it wudn't get shot. It wur old'er than rock by about two days.

My two coon hounds treed a coon one night near tha top of big ol'cottonwood tree. I shined tha coon and shot him out, and after the dogs wollered him around a bit, I went ta pick'im up,.... thet coon didn't have no "feet" jest 4 "stumps" yet he had climbed clear up ther. Neart as I could figger, he'd had his feet "mowed off" when sumone was mow'n hay!!

Shot a coyote one time what had a 12" piece'a "stove-pipe" stuck over his head!! It'd wore his ears completely off!

I run a coyote "down" on foot once, turned out he was a "dwarf", his body was full-sized but his legs was only 'bout 7-8" long (fur-buyer gave me $150.00 for'im, and had him mounted)!

Doc Contender: back in the 80's around Kentucky, there was an escaped panda bear on loan from China... :haha:

OK, I'm joking...

I trapped a 32 pound racoon, that was the biggest one I ever seen...

I raised a male coon back in the late 70s from before his eyes were open till he was 5 years old, He weighed 65 lbs, stood 19 inches to the top of his back and had the finest hide you have ever seen on a coon. He was raised by my arctic wolf (she nursed him along with her pups). He was house broken, afraid of the dark, afraid of heights, slept on his back and snored worse than my exwife. I also had a female that went 35 lbs at 3 years old, she was almost as ornery as my ex.

I don't know about pen raised but I did alot of coon hunting in my younger day in Jersey with dogs. We average 35 coon a year. the largest weight was 18 3/4 lbs and that looked like a bear in te tree. average was 10 to 12 lbs

I saw an all black coon while bow hunting once. His face mask was lighter than the rest of him. Rocky /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Gang it buckknife, it all can't be trapped out...
Up in the mountains, in the river of wind, there is a valley...

There are racoons there, as many as the stars in the sky...

:D I've learned that the first liar doesn't stand a chance! ::

Mountain never lie, they just tell the truth as they choose to remember it...

Boasting was a larger than life way of passing the time...

Keeping with that theme, I once tangled with Racoonzilla, it stood 18 feet at the shoulders, it took a weeks worth of musket balls and still kept comming at me...

The only reason I escaped with my life was that it tried to wash me before I was to be et, he lost me in the rapids...

Well guys, if you run across that 6 foot 2 in racoon I saw. You better have one big club. Now I think I saw Big Foot last year....................

You could skin, flesh & tan it and make a racoon fur blanket for your king sized bed, now that's livin'... :winking: :haha:

Be the envy of the neighborhood...

How about catching it, bit break it and using it as a horse.
Be the ugliest horse on the trail. Who cares, it would be the only horse that could climb trees. Talk about a portable tree stand.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
