This is my last chance to hunt with the Renegade for this deer season. We have 4 days of antler less starting Dec. 7. I will be out on the 9th for sure and possibly the 10th .

I shot a nice doe opening weekend. And am keeping my fingers crossed for a second deer this year sure could use the extra meat.

My rifles favorite load is .54 round ball w/.010 ox patch over 100gr FFg. :v

Good luck this weekend!

I'll be out this Fri & Sun (gotta work Sat :cursing: ) for our 2nd half of Muzzleloader season. First half kinda got messed up by a blizzard.
I got a big buck on opening day of firearm season with my GPR. Still have a good buck tag and a doe tag for this weekend. Then we get Jan 12-13-14 for doe only. Gotta work that Sat too.

I feel your pain Moose Meat. Our doe season only season starts Saturday and this will be our Last chance.

Good luck to ya.

I have to wonder how many deer you are planning to kill with one shot, using that load? You can put that 230 grain round ball clear through an elk at 100 yds. using 100 grains of powder behind it! It certainly is not needed to kill a deer.

My load is the same only different patch. You can never have too much gun. If it shoots great then that load is good for deer.

That load sounds like a good hunting load That should get complete penetration on any Deer sized animal.Good luck and hopefully we can start calling you Deer Meat :winking: :v

Agree...and I personally know that deer have been taken cleanly with a .22 rifle...but that's the exception, not the norm.
In my opinion, a lot of peoiple use target loads for hunting, and they will do fine for most close woods shots presented...but I use target loads for targets at the range and hunting loads for hunting.
I don't ever want to sit there some day and curse myself at having to pass on a P&Y buck at 125 yards because I'm carrying a target load in the barrel...by contrast, if I have a stout load and kill a deer at only 50yds, so what.

The same claim could be made about calibers...really don't NEED more than a .45/.50cal PRB for deer hunting but no question that a .54/.58/.62 gets in done with more authority every time...just like a stout powder charge compared to a target charge.

So IMO, claiming a certain charge is "too much" is like saying if you're carrying a 400yard scoped .30-06 you shouldn't shoot anything under 300 yards cause it will be too much gun.

I have a .58Cal. Hawken sitting in the safe do you think that would be enought for deer? :rotf:

My .54cal Renegade doesn't like much less powder than 95 gr. of FFg, and seams to group better with 100gr.

It could be all in my head :youcrazy: .

It's a load I shoot all the time, even when just messing around blasting targets.

 roundball
I shoot a .530 roundball with 18th patch 100 gr 2f
Mule Deer & Elk they know they been hit .
70 gr works for paper .

I take my vacation around deer season. I'll be out all weekend. I still have my 2 muzzleloader tags. I really don't want out in January, but if I don't do any good, this weekend, I'll be there. I used my .54 GreyHawk for shotgun season, anyway. I got a doe and a forkhorn.

DavidS,
I already burnt up 2 weeks of vacation time for hunting. Took a week in Sept for early Teal season and to go to Friendship IN for the NMLRA Fall Nats. Used another(split) for firearm deer season(wish I'd have not used 'em for a blizzard). Brought my ML for firearm season too.
I gotta use my only other week of vacation time for family vacation in June so I just have to make do with what days off I can get for ML & late winter.
Good luck this weekend!

Well didn't see a single deer in the woods, only heard one shot all day.

40 Deg.F sunshine, what a great day to be in the woods. :v
