Cold and windy here today. I don't really care for the wind, but only have so many days to hunt, so I went to the most sheltered location I could think of, in a hedge row overlooking a field. It was chilly but I was bundled up and the sun felt amazingly warm. About 3:30pm, I caught movement and saw a deer walking towards me along the row. It was a nice doe, and she fed right up to about 4 yards from my location. The wind was perfect, she had no clue. I could see her whiskers clearly as she browsed.
At the shot she bolted and dropped within sight about 60 yards or so away. I use a rifle I built several years ago. A TVM Virginia kit. .50 cal with 80gr ffg, and a heavy denim patch lubed with mink oil. I was not happy with this rifle when I built it, but it always shot better than it should have, and I've come to like her better than any other. This is maybe the 6th or 7th deer she's taken.
When the computer starts behaving itself, I'll get momma to post a pic or two. What a thrill to be so close to a late season deer.
