Cold and windy here today. I don't really care for the wind, but only have so many days to hunt, so I went to the most sheltered location I could think of, in a hedge row overlooking a field. It was chilly but I was bundled up and the sun felt amazingly warm. About 3:30pm, I caught movement and saw a deer walking towards me along the row. It was a nice doe, and she fed right up to about 4 yards from my location. The wind was perfect, she had no clue. I could see her whiskers clearly as she browsed.

At the shot she bolted and dropped within sight about 60 yards or so away. I use a rifle I built several years ago. A TVM Virginia kit. .50 cal with 80gr ffg, and a heavy denim patch lubed with mink oil. I was not happy with this rifle when I built it, but it always shot better than it should have, and I've come to like her better than any other. This is maybe the 6th or 7th deer she's taken.

When the computer starts behaving itself, I'll get momma to post a pic or two. What a thrill to be so close to a late season deer.

 Them close shots are rare, CONRATS. NEED PICS! What she weigh?

I once shot a turkey at about 8 yards. Last fall (2016) Called two in to 2 yards but I never saw em, my son was mighty hot that they came right to the call (behind a BIG pine tree) instead of to the decoy LOL

That is a special treat to have a deer that close. :applause: A great story, thanks for sharing with us. I got to touch a live deer once. I was hunting squirrels, with my back against a pin oak tree, when she walked or fed by me, I reached out and grabbed her right hind leg. She jumped about 4' up and took off like she was shot. You could not have got the grin off my face with a cold chisel and a 3# lag hammer.. ....robin

Here is a pic where she fell, best I could do, hunting alone. I'm trying to download a pic from the hedge row. Gorgeous view, my favorite place to hunt.

I'm as far from Prattsville as you can get and not get wet in the river. :)

Congrats on the harvest.

So, now that deer season is out of the way. Any of you fellow greene county folk gonna be at high woods on the 7th or the biathlon on the 14th. I should be camping there with a small wall tent, ory Korean War hex tent if it's chilly.
