I picked up a piece of heavy leaf truck spring out of the road the other day and plan on a couple of hawks from it hopefully.
It's 3/4inch thick ,3.75 wide by 26 inches long.
Figured I'd build a charcoal fire, pitch it in and let it burn out for annealing.
Should be fun to experiment with and see what can be made from such a large piece of spring steel.

My ground is rough and rocky. We grow a lot of new rocks every spring and my mower is very good at finding them? :shocked2:

Ahh yes, when I lived in NE Wisconsin, that was called "Summer Frost"! Guaranteed work for high school boys, hiring out to harvest "summer frost".

I think a lawnmower blade would be great stock for a throwing knife. I wouldn't waste a minute trying to make a real, using blade out of one. As Wick has said, good, verifiable blade steel is so inexpensive it doesn't make sense not to use it. But I know there is an allure in "repurposing" a piece of scrap.

My husband made a knife from a saw blade 29 years ago - it was not perfect by any stretch but I have NEVER had to sharpen it. Cuts thru just about anything like it is butter!

Had a throwing knife made of spring steel. It had a nice balance, just right for me. Unfortunately after the 3rd or 4th throw at a block, it snapped the point off. Hubby reground the point and on my next competition, the blade snapped in two. Poor choice of steel in my opinion.

No. More like poor heat treat, or, wrong heat treat for that steel and it's intended use. Too brittle. Wasn't tempered enough.
