What do you guys use besides dykem? Dont seem to be able to find any around here. Been thinking sharpie permiment marker, dry erase marker, finger nail polish???? anyway thought sharpie would work good but it wiped right off. OH and my candles must be the eco candles because they didn't leave hardly any soot.

I had a hard time finding Dykem locally also. The best deal I found on it was through amazon.com.

Enjoy, J.D.

At the stage of Dovetails and have 5 to do so will Look for the super sharpie laying around. should get me thru.
Thanks guys.

Dang dont know why I did not think of it earlier. Paint. just then it way down so it dries quick.

I worked twenty years in the tool room and we stopped using Dykum long ago. We just used blue magic markers. Make sure you have the oil off and they work great with no spilling or running. :idunno: :idunno:

Cleaned the barrel and used a Sharpie Pro....Here is my first ever Dovetail....into anything. Just a half a hair high nothing a little stoning won't fix. Best of all it's tight even without punch down. Oh I really need to measure better.

Looks OK to me.

Maybe a tad deep, but doesn't matter if you have allot of meat there to work with.
Doesn't matter on outside what it looks like, in reflection to it's useable purpose.
Dovetail slot Depth to barrel wall thickness is the most important consideration.
If you don't have enough wall thickness, it could make a weak place in the barrel &
bulge the barrel at that place. On most of them I install, I thin the base of the
dovetail to .030 to .045 on the thin wall barrels.

On all dovetails except the one for the front sight, I use an upsetting chisel.....allows for a reduced dovetail depth for the rear sight....the upset is filed into a molding which increases the effective depth. For the bbl lugs, the upset is peened down for a very tight fit and then filed smooth. Bbl lug dovetails are .035 deep and I use .040 brass sheet to make the lugs.....Fred

That first one is a little proud of the barrel its in the .00x area so happy with it. pic does not show it well. These lugs are .049 and I have plenty of straight wall barrel to work with. The second one is spot on height wise but only needs two hits with mallet to get it in. You can see my started crown work. Got my Stanley coning tool to use yet on it but that's later.
My second ever dove tail.

Nice work SwampRat.
Something to consider: grab a file and thin down the lug (prior to installation is easier) - the vertical tab you're gonna drill thru. It doesnt need to be that beefy - just increases your chance for drilling issues later on. And thinning will make slotting the hole easier.

I got grin factor! If anyone would have told me they would have come out as good as they did I wouldn't have believed them. Must of had someone watching over my shoulder for sure.

better pic of the finished lug.
