I believe Dixie Gun Works has some reasonable OA holsters - check there.

Basically any holster that will fit the centerfire Ruger Super Blackhawk should work also. It's the same frame. Just specify your barrel length. A .44 cal frame is a .44 cal frame.

Period correct the gun isn't, so your holster options are wide open, including a handy chest mount cross draw for hunting.

That's the one I use. Wearing one on your hip is "Cool" but.... not only is it exposed to the weather but it's exposed to thorns and brush to say nothing about wearing one on your hip all day. I like it under my coat out of sight, very handy to get to and compleatly protected from the weather. Personaly I think it the best place for hunting.

I use this one from Track of The Wolf. You can buy it in Black too, and with US or CSA on it.

$18.50 MADE IN THE USA TOO

Look at El Paso Saddlery. Their quality is second to none and they have a selection of styles. If you spent the money for a Ruger, at least put it in a decent holster.

For hunting, I use a nylon, across the chest holster, same as for my .44 Mag pistol. For SASS, I have lined leather holsters made by Mernicle up in Canada. Great leather work, but very pricey.

My 7 1/2" ROA, from an estate sale, came with a Bianchi holster made for the ROA. It has the Ruger logo stamped on the flap and is very well made. That has been discontinued, but I believe Ruger has a replacement in the same style and probably other styles that will fit. Try their website or give them a call. I've found their staff to be very helpful.

Regards, Jeff

Fantastic, another guy on my wavelength! I always go for practical, and to protect my hard-earned investments!

As for my big Walker, it's holster cost $18.95 at Cabela's and yes I wear it on my hip. For balance and just because I can, my left hip has a 3RD Model Dragoon in a non-standard cross-draw rig which is actually nothing more than a regular right handed hip holster. I'm not going through cat briars with mine, just shooting at a semi-organized BP League. The second revolver is my back-up for the Match anyway! Since the weight is balanced, no hip pain even from those huge cannons! :haha:

In a hunting situation, cross-draw under the coat is the best way to go

All the best,

Dave

I'm surprised they let you use the crossdraw holster in a league. Unless you stand with your back to the target and turn towards it while drawing, the crossdraw means the muzzle of a loaded weapon is not pointed downrange most of the time.

mykeal,

We aren't allowed to use a cross draw holster with a loaded gun, :nono: just an empty one. It's not really a cross-draw, merely a strong-side regular right hip hoster that's worn on the left hip with the butt facing forward. Once the Dragoon goes on the left hip, I don't touch it for the rest of the day until it's time to put it in a rug to take it home.

All firearms are capped ONLY on the common firing line once the range is called "HOT". Our League has grown to the point where we sometimes loan the use of our pistol loading stands to some of the new Guys (and Gals!), and the leather is used just for a place to put your gun when your not shooting. Less of a chance for a gun laying on it's side to get accidentally knocked-off of the table :(

We also encourage the use of leather to traverse the zone from the loading bench to the actual firing line that is a couple of yards forward of the bench. The revolvers are loaded with powder and ball at this point, but they aren't yet capped. The Dragoon is my back-up and as such isn't loaded with anything at all. It's just a balancing weight that looks KOOL! :)

Yes, you are correct in that cross-draw holsters do break the 180 degree rule. Our club has outlawed their use for that reason.

Thanks for your concern for my safety. Sorry to have given you a scare. I'm not realy that :youcrazy: :shake: .

Chat with you soon,

Dave

P.S.: IMHO cross-draw rigs for hunting are O-K IF you know what you're doing and have intensive experience in handgun handling to boot.

I have a csa holster just like Oldwolf's. I wear it on a nice heavy belt that I made out of a girth strap from the tack shop. I like that holster. It keeps the rain off and is easy to get my pistol out of quietly.I can carry it all day and forget I am wearing it. I have a mexican made quick draw rig. Its nicely made, and much quicker, but it is a drag in the field. The darn thing is always in the way.

smokin.50 - your range operates just like ours does. And I agree regarding use of the crossdraw holster while hunting.

I have the original leather holster that came with my Ruger Old Army BP-7. If you’re looking for one of those I have seen a few of them in pawn shops very inexpensive. I also use a western type manufactured by Black Hills leather. That holster will also work with my .44 magnum Super Blackhawk. I have provided a link to Black Hills for you.
