im making and old time leather mallet. the kind with washers made of raw hide. their stacked up with brass washers squezzing them tightly togather then a wooden handle turned down the question is how tight do they need to be ? i used big pipe wrenchs to tighten and im a big ol boy should i leave the handle so i can tighten later on?

Most of the old and new leather mallets That I've seen, where made out of raw hide. The raw hide is soaked and rolled tight and left to harden. Then handle hole bored, Then dipped in a heavy varnish and left to dry. I have one that I have used for over 25 years!

Years ago, I put a leather handle on my Bowie Knife. I cut slots out of thick leather "discs", and then fitted them down on the tang. I had a piece of cold roll steel end cap, threaded to fit down the beck end of the tang. I put elmer's glue between the layers of leather, and then cranked that end cap, or pommel, down using a big plumber's wrench. When it bottomed on the tang, I took it off, put another leather washer on, with some glue, and tightened that down with the wrench again, until it bottomed. Glue oozed out of every layer of leather. I wiped off the glue I could, and left the knife to dry. That was about 45 years ago. The handle is still there, and works just fine.

I bought a leather mallet or hammer at my local Ace hardware store. Its made of raw hide, glued in a roll, with the wood handle fitted to a hole drilled in the dried leather wrap. Its worked fine for years. Its for hitting wood, and soft metals, so you don't mar the material being struck. I don't use it to pound nails. :idunno: :surrender:  :hatsoff:
