So does the leather need to be the same thickness as the cap and does the hole need to be a little smaller than the cap? Is there one design better than others. If anybody has pictures of theirs it would be appreciated. Thanks
I am sure that others will chime in but I like at least 1/8"to 5/16" thick. A cap is usually tapered and they all vary a tad in size. You need to have a leather punch. So does the leather need to be the same thickness as the cap and does the hole need to be a little smaller than the cap? I have made many in just that way. Very simple projects. I used my drill press to make the holes then slit them. Downside is they only last almost a lifetime. The ones I have made the leather was about as thick as the cap and just slightly smaller then I cut a slit to the hole.
I would think the double leather as you show would be a PIA to use.I bought this one. Haven’t used it yet and not sure how it works with two sides both sides have holes. Bought it for hunting. Ideas?
The one I made today works good without a slit to the holes.Maybe so. Maybe I’ll take it apart and slit it to the holes.
I wonder if it makes a difference depending on the tanning process of the leather whether chrome or vegetable etc.I found the leather caused my caps to corrode if left in.

Think it has something to do with the tanning. Happened with two different cappers, one I left the caps in for many years. I disregarded that and made another out of new leather and it happened again in just two or three weeks.I wonder if it makes a difference depending on the tanning process of the leather whether chrome or vegetable etc.
