I'm wanting to build a left handed Rigby style English Sporting Rifle. I've found a lock but the problem I'm having now is finding a left handed hooked breechplug and tang for this style of rifle. There are plenty of right handed ones available from Track and Pecatonica, but I haven't been able to find a left handed one. Does anyone know where I might locate such a thing or am I looking for the proverbial hen's tooth?
Thanks for your help.

Randy

I am not up on English sporting rifles but I assume you are asking about a percusion. I don't think you will find any commerical one. You could spend big bucks having one custom machined at a machine shop.( before I retired we used to make a lot of "custom " parts in the tool room on the graveyard shift).Or you could put in a flint type breech plub and use a drum and nipple set up.But I doubt that a drum and nipple would be HC for An English sporting rifle.

squidly87, I also have not seen a left hand English Sporting Rifle left hand breach plug & tang. I think you will need to make your own. I have made the Ohio style breach plug in left hand but I have a lathe and mill which does make it fairly simple. Seek out a machine shop - draw out a blueprint of what you want and "bite the bullet" and have one made if you really want that rifle  .

Hi:

I have build a right hand model of that rifle. I would say you will have to have one (a breech plug) made. Do not try the drum route. Pressures are too high in an English rifling system. You would blow the drum off. Buy a right hand and take it to a machine shop and (yup) bite the bullet - tell em to make it to the wrong side  .

I was afraid that there were none available so this doesn't come as much of a surprise. Thank you all for your help. I guess this is just one of the joys of being left handed.

You might check in with The Gun Works. Though they don't list a lefty, all their English breeches are listed as custom made, so they might be able to track one down for you. They're good folks and extremely helpful.
