I'm not a lawyer, but as far as I can tell from the Fed's BATF site, 21+ for handguns, with exception for muzzleloaders, no age limit apparent for those.

However... there are state and community laws that are more specific (and draconian, depending on where you are) about age or possession at all. A good place to start is packing.org --->here<--- has not only carry laws, but links to various state regulations. A handy website to know, especially when travelling or transporting arms interstate.

Blackpowder is Blackpowder and has no relation to conventional firearms. However, like others have stated some local or state laws may say differently. www.NRA.org has a state to state listing.

Actually if you go to Cabelas or Midway USA, you need to be 21 years old or a "legal adult" which implies 21. A bp revolver is not classified as a regulated firearm but it is still classified/regulated as a destructive device/implement hence an age limit.

Thanks guy's for the information.

One last question, if it is illegal for someone to posses say a bp revolver, what about a handgonne?

This is for a 19 year old friend of mine who wants to get into some BP shooting.

I know I could hold the powder for it to keep that aspect legal, just wondering about actual possesion.

This age also varies by community. In some palces 18 is considered to be the age at which one is considered a legal adult. And if someone over the age of 18 commits a crime they will most definitely be considered an adult.

Does the restriction on buying handguns before 21 ears old apply to Blackpowder weapons as well?

How old does one need to be to buy black powder?

I can see the pressure mounting if you are old enough to buy the bp gun, but not the propellant...

Welcome to the people's republik of ILLy-noise, where that's the law. Where you can legally purchase BP arms without a license or anything else, but need a state-issued Firearm Owner ID card to buy any propellant, perc caps, or priming powder.

I'm not sure how it works for out-of-state visitors to purchase for themselves, but I do know that giving powder to anyone without a state FOID card is prohibited, and can be considered the same as a straw-purchase and means big felony time. :youcrazy: :youcrazy: Gotta love the convoluted rules that contradict each other too.

I bought a box of .440 balls at K's once and the lady asked to see my FOID card. I showed it to her and then tried to explain that it wasn't required for them. After a short (read very, very short) while I figured she would never grasp the difference between lead and explosives. :results:

In Illinois, you have to be 18 to purchase ammo , with a FOID card. I assume it is the same with BP and subs.

For those who are not familiar with a FOID (Firearms Owners IDentication) card, it is issued by the IL State Police. It must be presented each time a firearm is purchased , (as well as a waiting period and a phone call to the state) and ammo is purchased.
We've had them here for over 30 years, that I know of. The cost has always been $5 for 5 years. It's just an extra hassle we deal with .
It's hard to believe that there are still people , and they always seem to be in line in front of me, that will try to purchase ammo without one. Or, they act surprised that they need one. I always have it ready when I go after ammo or BP.
