Has anyone built either a Henry, Leman, or Deringer fullstock, flint Trade rifle. If so what problems have you run into, besides poor quality pic's of these guns. I'm leaning towards the iron mounted Henry, but there isn't much available in components but the trigger guard, which is ok as I was planning on making the thimbles, and buttplate myself. Track and MBS recommend the L&R late English lock, but to my way of thinking the Davis Late english looks more correct. Any thoughts on these musings, I'm thinking of making it my Winter project, anchored by a 150+ year old barrel Ed Rayl is reboring for me. Thanks Bill

I built my son a rifle 25 years ago based on a J. Henry trade rifle I saw in a book "Into the Wilderness" a National Geographic Society publication. I was hampered in the design because I was using a stock blank and buttplate I bought from a friend for $5 and it was not a perfect layout in the butt area. It was also scaled down for a pre-teen boy but not too small. He can shoot it today. I used a Dixie lock, found the trigger guard, thimbles and entry pipe; made the trigger, side plate, patch box, toe plate. 7/8" .45 Griffie barrel that I cut down 6".

It turned out really nice though.

I'd first get a copy of "The Trade Rifle Sketchbook" by Charles E. Hanson III. It is an inexpensive little book, about five bucks, with very useful drawings and discriptions of trade rifles by J.J. Henry, Deringer, Leman, Tryon and others. You really can't afford to be without it. It's available from Track, Dixie and others.
