Pietta 1860 Army (Medium).jpg
1860 Army. Custom made taller front sight, 3-lb. trigger pull, and 11-degree cut on the forcing cone by Jim Stroh. Imitation ivory grips installed by (then) Ajax. Shoots right where you point it.

Nice lookin' shootin' iron. I've been trying to figure out where to get a nice pair of faux ivory grips, several advertising makers outn there but can't decide which to go with.

I bought my first Colt 2nd gen Navy around 1972. It was a cased Robert E. Lee commemorative. I then traded that for a cased double set with both the RE Lee and the US Grant. There were only 250 double sets made, but somebody made a deal I couldn't refuse so I let the double go and then just got their standard 1851 Navy. I bought their 3rd model Dragoon when it came out in 1975 and later their 1860 army around 1978 or 79. Then I got married and just quit.

However, after retiring in 2007, I made up for lost time and have a safe full of them now

Here are all 11 standard Colt 2nd gen models from the Walker to the 1862 pockets

Here are some of my cased models. The cased Walker is a 3rd gen and of course, the SAA is not a Colt or even a percussion. It a Uberti movie copy of the Pistol Kurt Russell used as Wyatt Earp in tombstone

I ended up winning a single boxed RE Lee and a US Grant with matched serial numbers so I ordered a custom Bill Shumate case to recreate that double set I traded off back in the 1970s

Then later, Mr. Shumate had an extra Colt London style case that somebody had canceled so he listed it for sale on the Colt forum. I bought it and put two of my 4 RE Lee's in it since they were the only 2nd gen production in any numbers with round trigger guards.
They really show off nice in the OD lined case.

Here's two Colt 2nd gen sequentially numbered 1861 Navies that I picked up in a Morphy's auction for a bid of $600 plus premium in total for both. That's about the going price for one in the market place now so it's like one was free.

Lastly, last year I won an unissued M1840 heavy saber made by Emerson & Silver for the New Jersey Volunteer cavalry during the ACW, so I put this little vignette together of what a well dressed Union cavalryman might have carried in sidearms. First, an 1860 Army in his belt holster, then two 2nd model Dragoons in pommel holsters plus an original S & W model 1 second issue tip-up .22 short revolver that many Union soldiers carried as a backup

Thanks!

I spotted them on eBay a few months ago. The seller had them priced low with a "make me an offer" option. I made him an offer of $150 and he took it.

There are a couple of period leather makers out there who will make these to order for reenactors but they get a bit more than I paid for this set. It appears to have seen little use so now I wish I had a horse and saddle to use them with--:D

I had the grips done by Ajax a number of years ago. Think they are now owned by new/second generation owners (?) But they always had a good reputation.
I just did a search and they are still very active with a nice Website. I remember sending them the pistol grip/frame less the barrel and cylinder. Left the wood grips on. They hand fitted the new grips and returned it with the old wood grips. Was easy to do. They did a perfect job.

WOW!! What great photos ALL. It seems no one actually shoots the genuine Colt Second Generation pistols. If auction prices are any guide, they have become collectors guns in their own right. Can't blame them. There is an ample supply of clones for actual shooting.

I'm not sure how many percussion revolvers I have. 18 or 20 perhaps? Here is one of my favorites. This is an Uberti .36 Cal Dance Revolver imported by SMLS of Angelton Texas in 1981. Only 50 of these were made, along with another 50 commemorative versions. The photos don't do the high degree of polish and finish on these justice. This came out of the Dr James Davis collection.

A druggy stole $14,000 of my firearms. He was caught but I never recovered a single rifle or pistol. He got a free lawyer and only spent 1 year in prison. He has returned to my community to continue stealing. Sheriff doesn't do anything about it. He doesn't work so I can't sue him in civil court for damages. The courts and prison system wont tell me where he lives , etc. I'm still so angry about the robbery, the justice system and government that I just wish I could scream. My only hope is that he ODs and dies a slow miserable death.

Hopefully where nobody finds him for a while.

A GOOD while....

I don't have to count all mine - I only have one the ROA at the bottom. But C&B handguns are VERY popular here, given the general lack of anything else on mainland UK, what would you expect?

Top to bottom -

Navy Arms Remington Model of 1858 - .44cal.
Navy Arms Rogers & Spencer - my first C&B revolver and still, IMO, the best-handling - for me, anyhow.
Uh, Navy Arms brass frame kinda Model of 1858, shoots like a mad thing with only 20gr of 3Fg.
ROA.

You are correct about the 2nd and even 3rd generation percussion Colts. There's just been a privately published book on collection both the 2nd and 3rd gens. The author/publisher has the book listed on eBay. Everybody on the Colt forum is raving about the book. Unfortunately, my copy which shipped on December the 1st is still mired up somewhere in the USPS system. It got to a city that is only a two-hour drive from where I live on the 15th and that's the last info available from the PO. I think this is not an uncommon issue right now--sigh!

I have no interest in this and as I said I don't even have my copy yet, so I can't give an honest review. However, the other guys who frequent the percussion section of the Colt forum all seem pleased with their copies. If anyone has an interest in this subject matter and wants to get a copy---just go to eBay and type this in the search box.

You can also order directly from Eric if you want to use a USPS money order:

A USPS money order would be fine paid to Eric Deaton. Send to:

New Lebanon, OH 45345
Just $62 and thanks for supporting a new author. Hope you like it and put a good review out on the Colt Forum and any others that you belong to.
Regards,
Eric

That's how I got my copy. Ask him to autograph it.

Jim

The current "stylish" thing to do is treat the addiction and not punish the crime. Here in Ohio we now have "treatment" courts to use taxpayer money to keep them out of prison and try to coerce them into treatment for their addiction. The legislature loves the idea so much that they are pushing a bill to make most drug possession and trafficking a misdemeanor instead of the current classification of a felony. It works great for the state, it cuts the prison population drastically (with attendant cut in state expenditure) and dumps the entire cost and problem on the local government, which of course does not have the resources to handle them. State law would prohibit LE from disclosing to victims/potential victims the presence of the druggy/thief in their area. The idea being to help the former felons avoid the "stigma" and "discrimination" in employment and housing that convicted felons face. It is just much better to let Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public rent their house to them or hire them without knowing their past. They are ,after all addicts and therefore should not be held accountable for their actions. If a few innocent members of the public are victimized as a result, well that is an acceptable casualty in the eyes of the policy makers.

I certainly shoot mine!

Here are the black powder pistols and revolvers I owned from about 2010 to 2019. The German Suhl pistol and Colt Model 1860 (second generation) revolver are originals, as could be said for the Belian-made Centaure 1960 New Model Army revolver. The rest are reproductions.

The revolvers below were all purchased by me in 2020:
