Well I finally got a change to take the new side-lock out to the range to see how it shoots, I was quite surprised at the results right out of the box, see'n It only cost me $200.
used 40grs of Pyrd P, a patched 490RB cast from WW and I didn't wipe between shoots. Next time I take her out I'll have to fine tune her.

BP shooting is fun

I have a Tradition's Hawkins Woodsman like that with 1-66 twist (and they lock is on the proper side... :D ... just kidding). I shoot 80 grains of 3f and a .490 patched roundball with excellent results from it. A beautiful rifle to look at and to shoot....

You guys and your radical right side pop sticks :)

Just kidding. Nice rifle by the way <<<<<lefty>>>>>

I have a traditions Kentucky percussion that shot well right out of the box with 80 grains of fffg. I bought my eldest one just like it and we loaded it up with the same and he shot 5 rounds into a target at 35 yards. Made a very small group. After the 5, he wanted to shoot 3 more. He proceeded to miss. I told him that he will need more practice. On further examination, I discovered he was putting the last 3 in the same holes as the previous 5  I love Traditions products and the rifles are not pricey, although it appears your hawken has more ornaments than the kentucky.

I have a traditions hawkens and use 50grs FF at 25 yards and 85grs FF at 100 yards :results: :m2c:  :redthumb:

I've been shoppin' at Auction Arms for one just like that, but only found a flinter so far. I might have to buy that one.
Meanwhile that target is way too busy for a gun with iron sights. You'd better buy a pad from Rifle Magazine's publishers, Wolfe. :imo: :applause:
