 The rifle I am finishing has a maple stock with a good distribution of stripes and I am wondering how it will look with a Laurel Mountain Forge Honey Maple stain. I of course plan on using test patches but wonder if any of you guys have used this particular color on a gun.I also have never used Laurel Mountain stains before and wonder how good they are.I thank you in advance for any comments or suggestions you might have. Isn't this a great site?

Bunky, if you go to the "Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken" thread, Post #228796, you'll see a Hawken that I finished with Honey Maple on a Super striped maple stock. It's in the Percussion Forum. The rifle is stained with just Honey Maple from LMF and varnished with a oil based varnish I mixed up. No Aqua Fortis on this one, it would have made it too dark for what I wanted on this one.

Thanks for the reference to your rifle...it is a beautiful gun and you sold me on the color of stain...also, thanks for taking the time to answer my thread.

I've been using these stains for many years, and love them! Practice on a scrap, and try laying different colors on top of one another for some real rich tones. I usually stain til it's real dark then steel wool it back, leaving the bottom of the curls real dark and the tops ligkt. Then hit again with the Honey Maple for color! Experiment!

Bunky, I agree with Thornapple. If I had this rifle to do over, one of the things I would do is use a darker stain to bring out the curl and whisker or burnish it back with 000 steel wool before applying the Honey Maple. You'll get better contrast that way. You know....I might just re-finish this old gal some time this summer.
