I'm new to making some of my own gear and have some leather projects I want to use linen thread on. Does joann's usually carry it? I see they have dnc linen embroidery floss. Is that going to be strong enough or am I looking for something else. I'd rather pick something up local if i can so I can get started. I'm not super pc/hc so if there is something else that will look good but is a modern synthetic I am open to suggestions in alternatives. Thanks!

There's linen thread, then there's linen thread. It comes in an array of thicknesses, dyed, natural, waxed and unwaxed.

I do a lot of non-muzzleloading leatherwork, and much of it with a finer stitch. My go to is Crawford 4-ply which is both dyed and waxed. Not 100% "authentic, but it works well and I have lots on hand. Really, really strong. It comes in an array of plies and diameters.

Tandy is an easy source of thick waxed and dyed linen, but it's awfully spendy. They recently advertised a line of hemp thread, which is supposedly even stronger than linen, and in some eyes hemp is more authentic than linen. I haven't tried it yet, because it's really spendy and I'd like to see some before buying.

I have sometimes used linen thread I purchased from a Michael's Craft Store, but like others have already mentioned, I prefer the linen thread that is made for doing leather work.

I always buy my waxed Irish Linen thread from an online bookbinding supplier. They have a wide array of colors as well. I always get the 100 yard spools. Here is a link to the store. Very nice people to deal with. There was a delay once in an order and they enclosed a free gift for the delay.

Thanks for the advice! I recently lost my job so I have plenty of time to work on projects but little disposable income to put into it. So I'm making do with what I already have on hand...some leather, antlers, some basic tools, etc. This page has been great! Thanks again!
