Does anyone use coffee or maybe sawdust instead of grits?

Coffee and sawdust can work, but each has their own respective pros and cons. Grits remain the standard for their balance of performance, consistency, and low risk of fouling.
It’ll be interesting to see if anyone on the forum regularly uses these as substitutes.

I've tried coffee. It's hard to get it to be really dry, and it will mold readily. Sawdust might be a good way to start a fire. Hard to beat grits or cream 'o' wheat. BPI shot buffer works too but it's kind of expensive.
I'm curious to explore all the options. I think shooting 3-4 cylinders of each may make for an enlightening range day.

I've drunk coffee for about 50 years in controlled environments and camping in some pretty damps swamps... The coffee never molded... What are you guys doing with it?

Used coffee ground get moldy within two days. Using fresh grounds in your revolving pistol is SACRILEGE.
How would it even cross anyone's mind to use used coffee? That's just weird...

I've tried Cream of Wheat, corn meal and corn grits. I've concluded corn meal is best because it's finest ground, and it settles and tamps better than the others. Coffee grounds?!?! I don't think so. Way too coarse, IMO.
I have spent 65 years avoiding coffee! Hate the stuff. Using for filler is a good use for it.
My wife swears by her ground coffee, it all tastes like Maxwell house to me and that is awful. Every job I was on, coffee? No, don't like it. Oh you will. Still not though there is probably some time left, I truly doubt it. Tea has been my go to and I would NEVER use it for filler!
I use Kapok as filler both for cap & ball and black powder cartridges.
Corn meal for me too.

I intend to use lead as filler after seeing both of my revolvers seem to do equally well with their favored powder charge and whatever projectile I’ve used so I’m working on finding the excess chamber space to fill in the majority with more lead, which looks to weigh about 230-240 grns. But then I intend to hunt with mine so there’s that…
