There's a well known gun writer who used to shoot and write about traditional side locks and sounded like one of us. Then some years back he starting writing about how traditional round ball rifles were unreliable, and were pretty ineffective on game larger than a sick squirrel. He only touts the "unmentionable", sabot shooting, scoped thingies. So I guess we are only fooling ourselves thinking we could even seriously wound a game animal - assuming one could get these old guns to fire which apparently is highly unlikely - with any size lead ball powered by black powder. It appears my 55 years of killing deer (and other critters) was just a hallucination.
