Looking for some loading block patterns, anybody got any good ones ?

(I am not looking for any input regarding P/C )

It's wide open! :) Only suggestion I would make is keep your wood about 1/4 inch thicker than the diameter of the ball. Keeps it enclosed in the hole and a bit cleaner.

As far as PC goes, there may not be any documentation for the use of bullet boards prior to 1840 and even later.

Ooooops  Hope I didn't start somethin. :haha:

I've done straight sided (rectangle shape), paddle shaped, oval shaped. The possibilities are endless.

Track of the wolf has some nice bread board loading bocks. Plus they are cheap. Of course if you have the tools or have a son in high school shop course, they can be built cheaper.

Are you looking for "Ball BLOCKS"?? Or Loading blocks??? There is a difference.

The Ball block is designed to hold a Patched Round Ball is a small block that can be carried into the field, hung around your neck, or carried in your hunting pouch.

A Loading block is the kind of thing usually associated with Cartridge reloading, and holds the empty casings and finished cartridges during the loading process, when a single stage press is used. Similar blocks are made and used by folks shooting paper cartridges, and paper patched bullets in their MLers.

There is a chart up under " member Resources" on the index page to this forum, that will give you the correct drill bit sizes for most popular calibers and gauges.

Just remember that as the caliber sizes goes UP, so does the weight of the ball. Carry only what you reasonably expect to need on a hunt. It is often better to have to Ball Blocks, one in the pouch, and the other around your neck.

The one in the pouch is back up, but usually is not needed, unless you are either having a Very GOOD DAY, or a Very Bad Day hunting. :hmm: ( You can run short of ammo two ways. Either you are shooting and hitting everything you aim at, or you are missing everything, and there is still daylight left for you to try to come home with something!)

Someone had turtle shaped loading blocks posted in the classifieds at one point. I really need two of those in .32 and two in .45, but not right now. (budget you know - I can't do deficit spending like the Government can...)

Top two are maple. Next is purpleheart. Bottom left is cherry and bottom right walnut. I have others on oak and pine.

Here's one that Huntin Dawg made for me out of oak.

My most used is the three-holer that I keep attached to my horn strap (under a loop of leather so it doesn't dangle & tangle.
