40 Cal
Had a most humbling experience a couple weeks ago in our MT traditional ML season. ....I missed! I had fired a group at 100yds just to refresh my memory as to where my .54 cal. Kit gun was shooting and had a 3" group off bags right at point-of-aim. I thought it should be higher....forgetting I had filed the rear sight last spring to get it to this point! Anyway, I had the best buck I've seen in several years come by, a nice 5x5 whitetail.
Watched him make a scrape and dance around on his hind legs for a couple minutes while he licked and rubbed on an overhead branch. Pretty neat, but a weird shot angle standing on 2 legs! He got down and was broadside at 80yds. I attempted to hold on his brisket, and fired a PRB his way. At the shot, he never flinched, turned to look behind him (where the ball must have hit) and walked off with some other deer...turning to look back several times at the brush patch where he had been. After examining the area, I could see no sign, blood or actions that led me to believe he was hit. I have concluded that I shot under him, holding lower than I intended. About 3 days later another buck showed up in exactly the same spot. I took the exact same shot I had missed earlier.... but held dead center...and that's where I hit.
