Loading cylinder capped or in capped!

I have a Uberti 1858 New Army and haven’t fired it yet just getting everything together waiting for warmer weather. When removing the cylinder to load with a bench loader, do you put the caps on before or after putting cylinder in revolver? I have my reservations about capping first as I have a bit of issue reinserting the cylinder. Practicing getting better, but want to be safe!

Put the percussion caps on after the cylinder is back in the revolver.

Many years ago I fired an open top Colt replica revolver with the barrel assembly removed. Held the frame with cylinder in place by pressing the cylinder edge against a wooden post. Fired several shots but did not think to set up something to see how much penetration the round balls had. Reports were loud and seemed powerful enough to cause severe injury or worse if memory serves.

Based on this would not want to get shot by a dropped capped and charged cylinder.

Most definitely cap it after you put the cylinder back in the gun.

Putting the cap on the cones is the last step in reloading. Having a capper makes the job easy after the cylinder is placed in the revolver. It's much easier with the capper than trying to use your fingers.

I realize that but I am on oxygen recovering from Covid, cancer and pneumonia been out of hospital for 2 weeks! Hope to be able by warm weather!

Putting caps on a Remington revolver is difficult even with a capper. I think the Polish Capper is one of the few that can fit a cap on a Remington cone.

There is also this plastic capper that appears to work on a revolver. Hmm, this plastic capper also comes from Poland. They must know something about cap and ball revolvers.

Enlarged the opening on my 1858 REM to fit capper. Also got the nipple wrench head from Dixie to fit the REM. Already had 1/4" wrench.
