I am making my list for my Flintlock purchase after X-ams
The question is are the lock covers universal for right or left hand use
Thanks

Most likely. If they are like the ones I have made it is just a matter of turning 180* for them to fit correctly.

Somebody probably makes them commercially, I dunno. But, most guys make their own. I never used one, just held my hand over the lock in bad weather. I really enjoy having frozen and chapped hands.

I have seen at least two different makers offering them for sale at Fort Frederick. In both cases they seemed to be sewn to a wrist/lock profile with two identical sides & would thus work on a right or left handed gun. If ordering one, I would simply ask the seller if their cover is made for right, left or universal use.

You can make one out of scrap leather. Take a thin, relativly speaking, piece of leather cut into a square large enough to pull down over the lock on both sides, punch 2 holes in the front and 2 holes in the back, soak the whole thing in cold water pull tightly over the lock and tie it down. You might want to cover the lock with plastic to keep the moisture off of it. Let it dry for a couple of days and you will have a form fit cover tied down fore and aft of the trigger gaurd.

Here is a pattern I have saved, maybe from this forum? It appears to be made to fit a specific "hand", but you could certainly change that by turning the leather to the opposite side for sewing.
