Hi All
Well the problem is. The arm inside the lock that holds the hammer back looks to be chipped or broken. Its the peice that has an arm thet sticks out. I dont know who made the lock its on a Hatfield rifle. Does anyone know anyone in the Galena Ill. or Dubuque Ia. area that can either get me the part or fix the lock? Thanks for the help.
Stan

Stan, It's called a Sear. I'm not familiar with Hatfield guns, but have read somewhere that their locks were made in a couple different European countries. Dixie Gun Works may handle parts for these locks. A good welder with a TIG system should be able to make an easy repair. The third option is, http://lr-rpl.com/index.php?option...del-06-flintlock&catid=36:cva-small&Itemid=62
You could call them and ask if their sear is interchangeable with the stock Hatfield lock, if not you can get their replacement lock and probably be better off in the long run. Good luck!!!

I just got a new Track of the Wolf catalog last week. They have a direct replacement lock for the Hatfield rifle. The replacement is made by L&R, an American company and is most likely better made than the original that broke. One solution would be to replace the entire lock, of course it will be more expensive than to repair the one you have, but then again, it is also an upgrade.

Be aware that the early Hatfields were made in St. Joseph, Missouri. Later ones were made by Pedersoli and those are the ones that the L&R replacement works on. Not sure if the locks on the originals were Pedersoli or not.

The Euro Hatfields are easily identified from the American made ones by the use of Italian proof marks on the later barrels....the U.S. made ones have none, of course.

The L&R is not necessarily an upgrade as Pedersoli makes some fine locks, on many of their guns, at least. I wouldn't take an L&R over the lock in my early Hatfield as it works like a champ and has a nice color case hardened finish. If it breaks I will repair it or have it repaired.

The major advantage the L&R lock has over the other is parts availability. Parts for the Pedersoli locks are comparatively very expensive and the only source I know of is Richard Beauchamp of Flintlocks, Etc. at (413)698-3822....he advertises in the classifides in Muzzle Blasts and is the U.S. distributer.

The cost difference is likely because of import and the fact that they are finished as sold....as I understand it. The parts for the L&R are sold unfinished/unhardened and they would likely want you to return it for repair or you will have to finish the part and harden it appropriately.

Hope that gives you enough to go on. Enjoy, J.D.

Call "Cain's Outdoors". I don't have their number but you can Google it. Ed used to have a bunch of Hatfield parts & may have what ya need.

The L&R replacement lock is assembled, but from the photo, is not blued or color casehardned. I was just repeating what ToW said in their advertisement. I have a Pedersoli flintlock pistol, Harpers Ferry copy. The lock works ok, but the relationship between the cock and frizzen is very poor. Flints must be sharpened every half dozen shots.

Thanks lot guys . It looks like Cain's Outdoor has the part i need.
Thanks again Stan
