I went to a local gun show today and came home with an original SXS double. I think it's a 14ga. The interesting thing about it is the length of the barrels..36.5" Along with it came a can of large musket caps.

Here it is along side of my other SXS 12ga that has 32" barrels. I'm wondering if those long barrels might make a good duck, goose or turkey gun. I'm hoping to get out and pattern it before too long.

cool gun.. Any chance of some close up pics?

The thinking back in the day was that the longer the scattergun barrel the more range it would provide. Your newly aquired double was probably someones duck or goose gun. Do you know if they are choked?

That is a lovely shotgun. Given the 14 gauge, it wasn't necessarily intended as a waterfowling piece. 36" isn't all that long for a percussion fowler, especially in the early days of cap locks. It should make a great turkey gun though.

 WOW!!!! I never see anything like that at a local show :cursing: . Please be sure and give us a follow-up report on how it performs  . I have a 14 ga. single barrel fowler and would love to see what you discover with that long barrel X 2 :hmm: !!!!

I love double M/L's, I made this one a few years ago. Local grown cherry stock, .45cal rifled E.R. straight tapered barrels, L&R small Manton locks, sand cast T/G & B/P, I made everything else.

Holy @#$^%&*!!!

You've got some serious skills there pal. If you ever get tired of that gun just send it my way.

NWTF, I didn't mean to highjack your thread, just love those doubles, and would also like to see some close-ups of the locks, thanks for showing them.
Thank you for the comments on my double rifle. I'm in the process of re-doing the sights and had it at hand, so I thought I would show it. Thanks again!
