Is there such a critter out there? I am thinking about a rifle that can shoot 200+ yards accurately.

Brian

just was shooting my 58cal cva hawken at 200 yards yesterday, didnt shoot for group just trying to figure out how much drop i am getting so i can modify my sights to be dead on.

With patched ball, its extremely obvious how little wind it takes to throw it off course. Much better with a conical or the other style of projectile we cant talk about, for those 200 yard shots.

I have shot balloons at 150 yds with mine. The set trigger doesn't hurt and I added a longer adjustable rear site. I suspect that if that the rifle is capable of much more. Does it have to be a muzzle loader? If not, maybe one of those .54 paper cartridge Sharps(?)

My muzzleloading Schuetzen does it.

That's the whole idea of the game. Offhand shooting at targets at 200 yards.

It is not a roundball shooter though.
It shoots lead bullets from its fast twist shallow rifled barrel.
The barrel has a 1:18 twist and the rifling grooves are only about .002 deep.

I normally shoot .40 caliber 350 grain paper patched bullets in it.

I have tried shooting patched roundballs in it but it might as well be a smoothbore. The accuracy with them is poorer than poor.

Shooting from the bench, I have no problem with the 150 yard eight-inch gong on our shooting range with my .54 Great Plains flintlock shooting patched balls (it has a Lyman 57 peep sight).

I haven't shot groups on paper at that range. But the marks on the gong seem to cluster into four or five inches. I haven't taken it beyond 150 yards.

My original .58 cal, 1863 U.S. Springfield rifle musket has three tip-up rear leaf sights. They are for 100, 300, and 500 yards. My 1863 is quite accurate, firing Minie balls. But please don't ask me to put on a demonstration at 500 yards!

Brian, I have an Enfield short rifle that I can shoot 1 gal. milk jugs at 200yds. I dont hit them everytime but often enough to have fun trying. Cheers! Bob E

What is your goal? Hunting target shooting or perhaps both?

I started out with a rifle for hunting and that quickly turned into shooting targets out to 1,000 yards

The Gibbs is the best target rifle on the market outside of a custom rifle. 45 cal shooting a 540 grain bullet.

I have test targets that are 1.75 inch groups, 5 shots at 200 yards off the bench. Is that accurate enough for what you are wanting to do? Now I really wished that I could shoot a 10 inch 5 shoot group at 1,000 but that is not very likely

The long range folks shoot 800yds. to 1000yds at a 6' target. A 10" group is next to impossible. They are happy (but not satisfied) to get all hits on paper at the 1000 yard range with a muzzle loader (Gibbs type gun).

Yes, there is. It is called a slug gun. You will see them at Friendship and other big matches. They are bench rifles. The slug game is quite different than most of us are used to. Scopes are allowed. The rifles shoot a bullet (slug) not a round ball. The shooters are a type to themselves, very-very obsessed with doing things just their way. Groups at long ranges are amazing.

I shoot in long range competition. the most common rifle used is the pedersoli Gibbs long range muzzleloader. 1-18"twist .45. they are very, very accurate. reading the wind is the most critical part, just like in modern high power competition. also, we shoot the modern high power target as well, the bull is 48" on a 6'6' white. the best shooters are nearly always in the high 80's to mid 90's (out of 100). there is also a 1200yrd match at camp atterbury in October. best game in the world.

Yes there are guns that can shoot out to 200 and even farther with great accuracy. But it is not just the gun it is the load and the shooter. Here are mine that will do that. Ron
