Hello all ... I'm a proud shooter of a Lancaster longrifle...percussion, and am wanting a smoothbore flinter...

If a fella had say $12 to 1400 where should he start looking ? Im interested in Rustic Arms Colonial Fowler as well as the TVM fowler, but from skimming various posts on here im left scratching my bald head...

What say ye all..

check out track of the wolf and forums. you can get some good deals unless u r dead set on a custom

Oh failed to mention... im a backwards headed seeing person... haha

Thanks fellas

Rustic Arms Colonial

Is that a dealer of India made guns? Seems the nicest sounding, olde fashioned names are often for dealers of the India made items.
Check the classifieds here and elsewhere for what you are looking for, you never know what will turn up.

Early rustic arms from what I can tell are custom builds out of MO..Father, son in law team...or something to that effect.
As with every builder in my price range I've read good and bad

You are correct that they are a custom build shop. I've looked at their guns before and their "Colonial" model looks good.

If go that route opt for the octagon/round barrel over a straight octagon barrel. If they can do an O/R smoothbore they can do it in rifled too as Colerain offers their barrels either way.

A swamped barrel would be more appropriate, and they offer that as a $200 upgrade, but octagon/round is correct also....a straight would be unheard of in a gun of this era. Also opt for brass if it's not standard on this gun as steel mounting wasn't done.

I would forgo their carving unless they have been practicing. While good, it appears to be more "cut in" than relieved and the backgrounds appear choppy.

Be sure to check their "options" page as it appears that on some guns things like the sideplate are an additional cost.

As far as Jackie Brown, it's up to you but I don't find his work appealling. I've handled several and they are just not to my taste. If you go with him, do your reseach and specify what barrel you want. He uses many extuded tube barrels and some find that undesirable. Research will determine if that's right for you.

Enjoy, J.D.

I have a Jackie Brown fowler, and have gotten lots of comments on how authentic it looks (though I have to agree, his fit and finish aren't the best). I haven't tried true live firing yet, but I've heard the arguments on whether or not his barrels are okay. Jackie swears by them, and there haven't been any catatrophic failures that I know of. The argument I've heard against them is that the DOM tubing he uses is significantly harder than most barrels, which means that it theoretically could take more stress, but it's also more brittle, and if it were to break, it would give no warning and could cause more damage. So you might do some research on it first.

Take a look at North Star West. They offer several guns with a left hand option and I know from personal experience that their service is excellent.
