Savage muzzle loaders have blown up. That does not keep me from shooting US made guns.

Do you have any citation to an incident in which an Indian made gun failed?

I have had several India made muzzle loaders never a problem.

You're probably not going to get .50 caliber. .45 is usual.

Of what's available today, the Pedersoli LePage is considered the best of the flintlocks. Try Dixie...or Italian Firearms Group. They should be able to get anything Pedersoli makes. Pedersoli is not 100% happy with their distribution in the USA.

I tried to make a special order of a Pedersoli gun that is "offered" but not stocked by US distributors. I was told to send an order with full amount and mMAYBE in 6 months I will have it.

It would have been faster to order it from an British distributor and sort through the import customs laws.

I have the French 1773 from MVTC and am quite happy with it. Loads of fun, sparks like mad. At $375 it ain't a bad deal.

BUT, do you trust it not to blow up shooting a roundball using a standard (not heavy) load?

Yes I do. Why do you ask?

There is an ongoing mythology about India made guns being unsafe. I have heard of only one incident of an India made gun exploding (with blanks) and the following investigation determined that there was nothing unsafe about the metallurgy of the barrel, but there was a large build up of something that probably acted as an obstruction in the barrel. Any muzzle loader from any maker that is shot with the load separated from the charge is likely to burst the barrel.

I believe that guns from MVTC or Loyalist Arms are safe to shoot. I have full faith in my Loyalist Arms guns.

Who did you try to order from? If nothing else, e-mail Pedersoli direct. I've actually ordered BP firearms from overseas, it's not a big problem.

The only instance I have heard of is a failure during proof testing in England. At that the alleged evidence was poor quality pictures of a trade gun from 15 ft away, with no close ups to show manufacturer etc. You should be aware, that a few US made guns have failed at European proof houses. Do you still shoot your US made gun?

There are folks who are afflicted with the Popeye Syndrome. Those who think, if a little is good, a lot must be much better. The type that actually fills the entire bore with powder and then when the alcohol wears off, wonders what happened to a few fingertips. For such people, any gun, regardless of where made, is dangerous. I see it with deer hunters in PA, where a few hunters think it is necessary to have a modern in-line loaded with 300 grains of 10fg Nuclear Whupbutt.

Adding to Zonie's comments, I had a pair of the Queen Ann pistols.
The trigger pull on these pistols would give you a hernia, and after YANKING on the trigger, you could possibly shoot yourself in the foot. Not Good!
There are much better pistols!

Here's my Pedersoli 1805 Harpers Ferry Officer's pistol. I finished it out from a kit that came from Dixie Gunworks. Very easy 'kit', really only took shaving off some wood and polishing the brass and final finishing. I used some pics of originals to go by and I feel that I got it looking a little more correct than if I had bought it finished. Anyway, fun little gun and only about $400 in kit form. By-the-way, I know you said .50 caliber, rifled. This one is rifled, .58 cal. But who's counting anyway, right? :)
