How do you get it curved without hammering out all the detail?

I used a block of wood with a notch cut in it . Then I hammered a piece of iron pipe across it.

The new quarters depicting states look nice. I think one of those would make a good thumbpiece. But, you have already made yer selection. Doin' yer own thang, that's good.
