When I first started building LRs, bought 4 very curly blanks from Harrison at a big price, but thereafter bought medium to upper grade blanks in sugar and red maple which didn't have vivid curl but when stained had enough to make the stock interesting. ....in fact some of my Bucks County LRs had no curl {like many originals} and still looked OK.

If a LR is w/o carving, etc, then vivid curl would be the main attraction and that's a good thing, but w/ a carved stock very vivid curl is a distraction, IMO. If a LR has both a very vivid curly stock and beautiful carving, what would be the first thing noticed? The vivid curl. Shown below is a BC w/ nearly plain wood but still looks OK?.......Fred
