I believe it’s made of mild steel, maybe iron. I imagine that someone could fabricate a shorter spring for it.

In your Honest Opinion, am I looking for a "needle" in a Humongous Haystack?
Obviously I don't know anything, but there must be an Extremely Large and Very Lucrative Market for Antique Spare Parts , wheather Replicated, Recast or Original! Personally, I have been "Learning" how to Restore Antique Military Edged Weapons because there's a Humongous and Extremely never ending Demand for that Very Specialized Service!
If you can do something special and extremely well, I can Promise you that you'll get tired of Counting Money!
