I used to have a book with detailed instructions for building a Kentucky rifle and pistol. It had full size fold out patterns and complete instructions to build a percussion lock from scratch. I started building the lock but quit when my kids came along 13 years ago. I can't remember the name of the book and was hoping someone here could help.

There's always two or three for sale on ebay, I think you're talking about building the Kentuky rifle by McCrory. I wouldn't spend more than ten bucks on it . Much better books are available nowadays. Dixon's building the Pennsylvania rifle, and Alexanders "The Gunsmith of Grenvill County" are both available from Track, or MBS. They are more detailed, and more illustrated, especially Alexander's book, They are well worth the money. YHS Bill

I think Bill has it right the author was McCroy or something like that. It was titled "Building the Modern Kentucky Rifle". It included a full size set of plans for a rifle and a pistol. I think it was first published in 1959 or there abouts. I still have a copy of the book but it seems I've mislaid the plans. It was the first book I bout when I decided to try and build a muzzle loader back when I was a teenager in the mid 60s.

It is an outdated book, but it was one of the first, if not the first book to deal with this subject in detail. It's hard to compare this book to later ones considering the large amount of information available now that was not available back when it was first written.

Hey Guys,

"Recreating The Americn Longrifle", by William Buchelle, also had a fullsize pullout print of a rifle and a pistol. It is also a top quality rifle building book unlike the McCrory book which is severely lacking.

Thats the one I had. I have found some for sale on the net. I'll buy a new one and then my old one will turn up like magic.
